Saturation Studies: Sedimented Time
A monumental sheet of paper slowly emerges from a bath of dense black pigment. Almost imperceptibly, Andreas Johnen raises it from the liquid. The saturated paper grows heavy, its increasing weight resisting his movement. There is no expressive gesture or dramatic intervention, only a sustained act of attention through which pigment gradually permeates the fibres and the material undergoes a quiet transformation.

First work using black watercolor paint on paper. The beginning of my exploration of black watercolor paint on paper. A paper cube without an internal structure. 638 g of paper — painted approximately 400 times. A fundamental decision to use these two specific materials: English watercolor paper of this weight combined with neutral black watercolor paint by Igor Trestoi.

What you see is what you get.
The artwork is a reality that depends on the viewer’s perspective. Just like other realities. Much like reading, the narrative unfolds the image. My works focus in particular on methodologically verifiable interactions. The viewer reads the »text,« and a three-dimensional overall image emerges.
